The Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) at UTAR, in collaboration with DJI Malaysia, successfully hosted a half-day Drone Workshop on 24 February 2025 at Sungai Long Campus. The workshop provided media students with hands-on experience in drone operation and its applications in the industry. This marked the second consecutive year of collaboration between UTAR and DJI, underscoring their commitment to integrating emerging technology into media education.
The workshop was facilitated by Ms Yong Xin Yi and Dr Liew Wui Chern from the Department of Mass Communication. It featured DJI representative Mr Lee Jsheng along with a team of six expert trainers who guided students through the fundamentals of drone technology and practical flight exercises. The event was attended by FCI Deputy Deans Mr Thinavan Periyayya and Dr Cynthia Lau Pui-Shan; Department of Media Head Mr Anthony Gandolfo Miranti Jr, and faculty members, namely Dr Saw Teck Chew, Dr Tan Jue Jun, and Mr Beh Chun Chee.
With around 80 students from the Broadcasting, Media Studies, Corporate Communication, and Journalism in Chinese Media programmes attending, the workshop provided a comprehensive introduction to drone technology in media production. The session began with a product briefing, followed by a hands-on flying exercise where students practised aerial videography, manoeuvring techniques, and safety protocols under expert supervision.
This collaboration highlighted UTAR FCI’s dedication to bridging media education with cutting-edge technology, equipping students with industry-relevant skills for careers in digital content creation, news reporting, and cinematography.
