The Student Development Committee at the Centre for Foundation Studies of Kampar Campus brought blockchain to the spotlight with an engaging talk titled “Blockchain Technology Applications” on 26 February 2025 at UTAR Kampar Campus.
The session featured Ts Dr Lee Wai Kong, an Associate Professor from UTAR Faculty of Information and Communication Technology, as the guest speaker. The talk aimed to introduce the basic operating principles of blockchain, its historical development, and its applications across various industries.
Dr Lee began by sharing his journey of becoming an associate professor and a prolific researcher, specialising in GPU computing, cryptographic engineering, and embedded system design. He said, “The blockchain certificates are convenient to trace and not easy to forge. In the Internet of Things (IoT) field, the blockchain certificates are connected to sensors or devices, and it is easy for the users to trace the data transactions among the cloud servers.”
He then discussed the motivation behind blockchain technology in addressing network security issues in transactions through decentralised systems, public ledgers, and cryptographic methods. Additionally, he also explained the private and public key cryptography, using practical examples to enhance understanding.
Dr Lee addressing the impact of blockchain in the future
He further elaborated on the evolution of blockchain technology, beginning with Blockchain 1.0 and Bitcoin mining, highlighting its advantages and drawbacks, particularly in terms of energy consumption. He added, “The Smart Contracts in Blockchain 2.0 have expanded blockchain applications, attracting significant interest from industries such as finance (FinTech), manufacturing, auditing, and renewable energy (SolarCoin). Meanwhile, the different blockchain networks can be interconnected through smart contracts, forming the foundation of Blockchain 3.0.”
Before ending his talk, Dr Lee discussed some case studies and outlined the future prospects for blockchain applications. While acknowledging blockchain as an emerging technology, he emphasised the importance of evaluating its necessity in different industries based on various factors.
The insightful talk concluded with an interactive Q&A and group photograph session.
