Students, staff and representatives from Putrajaya Power Station
Thirty-seven Foundation students and six lecturers from the Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Sungai Long Campus participated in an educational visit to the Putrajaya Power Station in Presint 11 on 5 May 2025. The purpose of the visit was to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application by exposing students to actual energy production systems, operational safety practices, and engineering processes at a major power facility.
The visit began with a welcome briefing, followed by an educational talk by Ms Vishalline, who provided an insightful overview of the station’s operations, technical capabilities, and achievements.
Commissioned in 1993, the Putrajaya Power Station operates five gas turbines with capacities ranging from 105MW to 135MW, providing peaking power during periods of high demand. The station is equipped with a black-start diesel generator, essential for restarting the plant during outages, and has an impressive record for safety and operational excellence. It was the first in Malaysia to obtain ISO 9002, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001 certifications.
The guided tour that followed allowed students to observe key areas of the station, including the Fuel Forwarding Pumphouse, Black Start Diesel Generator, high-voltage transformers, and Siemens gas turbines. Students also gained insights into safety protocols and technical systems through interactive discussions with plant staff.
To encourage knowledge retention and engagement, a quiz competition was conducted during the return trip, with five students, namely Nigel Hew Dao Yuan, Teh Wei Li, Loh Wai Hin, Kok Hai Wen, and Lovienath Kumaresan, emerging as winners.
The visit not only provided students with a deeper appreciation of Malaysia’s power generation sector but also inspired interest in pursuing future careers in the energy and engineering industries.
