A snake year and the River Delta:
UTAR alumni explore cultural and culinary delights in China

The imminent end of the Snake Year (2025) marked another exciting annual international alumni trip for UTAR, a gathering that strengthened ties among alumni across borders. The past journeys have taken alumni to corners of the world, both near and far. This year, however, the trip led 22 of them to Zhejiang and Jiangsu, China—thousands of kilometres apart from the birthplace of nasi lemak, Malaysia.

The saga of genteel UTARians: Alumni trying on traditional Han clothing at the Southern Song Imperial Street

The Alumni International Social Trip to Hangzhou, China 2025 was held from 18 to 25 October 2025. It brought the alumni not only to the scenic capital of Zhejiang, but also to several attractions and cities across the Yangtze River Delta, including Nanjing, Wuxi, Suzhou, and Wuzhen.

“Ten miles from home, and the world feels different everywhere (离家十里路,各处各乡风).” This ancient Chinese saying reminds us that every place offers something new to discover. The annual UTAR alumni trip embodied this spirit—providing participants with an enriching cultural and social experience that blended China’s ancient heritage with modern innovation. It also strengthened the connection between UTAR and its global alumni network in a fun and meaningful way.

Throughout the week-long adventure, participants immersed themselves in the rich tapestry of the Yangtze River Delta—from donning elegant Hanfu, strolling through historic streets and palaces, to exploring renowned cultural landmarks. The agglomeration of locations the group visited included Deshou Palace, Hefang Street, Southern Song Imperial Street, Nanjing City Wall, Xuanwu Lake, Confucius Temple, Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, Great Bao’en Temple, West Lake, Qinhuai River, Taihu Lake, Huishan Ancient Town, Qili Shantang Street, and Wuzhen Water Town.

“Food is the first necessity of the people (民以食为天).” Beyond immersing themselves in the cultural and historic adulation of the Yangtze River Delta, it goes without saying that scrumptious cuisines also played a big role in the exuberant adventure to create cherished memories. They savoured regional specialities such as Dongpo Pork, Huaiyang Cuisine, Squirrel Fish, and Ayue Stewed Pork Knuckle. Not all appetites were satisfied with traditional fare alone, a modern twist also served as a great appetiser to a heartfelt exploration of China and camaraderie. Dining at BBQ Hotpot restaurant and 85°C Bakery Cafe offered a merry contrast, from BBQ and hotspot-styled buffets to sweet pastries and tea, adding a warm and indulgent layer to their adventure.

The trip to Zhejiang and Jiangsu, China, was a meaningful and enjoyable experience that gathered alumni and brought them closer to their alma mater. For the University, this trip particularly captured the essence of the saying, “Joy knows no bounds when old friends reunite (故人相聚, 其乐无穷)”. UTAR values its alumni as an invaluable network, and maintaining these enduring connections not only strengthens professional bonds but also preserves the shared spirit and pride of being part of the UTAR family.

The University extends its heartfelt wishes to UTAR alumni around the world—may your journeys continue to be filled with discovery, success, and lifelong friendships. As the saying goes, “Ten miles from home, and the world feels different everywhere.” Though distant from the vibrancy of Kampar and Sungai Long Campuses, may each new place you reach remind you of the shared roots that forever connect UTARians.
