Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe and Prof Dimitrios with the signed MoA
UTAR further extended its international collaboration efforts with the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with Purdue University. The ceremony, held on 17 November 2025 at the Sungai Long Campus, formalised a dual master’s degree programme in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science following the earlier memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between both institutions on 3 September 2024.
UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat said, “Today’s ceremony is not only a celebration of institutional partnership, but also a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to accessible, world-class education.” He highlighted that the collaboration, first envisioned in 2024, aims to jointly develop impactful programmes, expand research exchanges, and prepare students for an increasingly digital and complex global landscape.
With the signing of the MoA, UTAR and Purdue University will launch a fully online dual master’s degree programme designed to give qualified students the opportunity to earn both a UTAR master’s degree and a Purdue master’s degree concurrently.
The programme features cross-articulated courses from both institutions, enabling students to meet degree requirements across UTAR and Purdue in a streamlined manner. Designed to build strong capabilities in artificial intelligence and data science, the dual-degree pathway reflects the growing importance of these fields in the global digital economy. The collaboration also aligns with UTAR’s commitment to providing affordable, holistic, and globally relevant education by creating transnational learning opportunities that allow students to gain international exposure while staying connected to the local environment.
Purdue University’s Senior Vice President for Partnerships and Online, Prof Dr Dimitrios Peroulis, shared his enthusiasm for the collaboration. He commended UTAR for its remarkable achievements in just 23 years, noting the University’s strong student outcomes and academic accomplishments. He expressed that it was an honour to collaborate with UTAR, particularly in the areas of data science and artificial intelligence, noting that such efforts will equip students to navigate and succeed in an increasingly complex global landscape. He said, “This initiative represents an important step toward building programmes that will lead to significant long-term success and shape the future together.”
The signing of the MoA marks a new chapter in UTAR–Purdue cooperation and sets the stage for expanded academic collaboration, research engagement, and innovative programme development in the years ahead.
