FEGT student gains valuable industry experience with Infineon Technologies

UTAR Bachelor of Electronics Engineering with Honours student Lee Wei Xin from the Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology (FEGT) gained valuable hands-on experience through an industrial-based Final Year Project (FYP) with Infineon Technologies (Kulim) Sdn Bhd, a leading global producer of semiconductors.

Encouraged by his supervisor, Ir Dr Loh Siu Hong, Lee pursued the opportunity to undertake an industrial-based FYP with Infineon, where he had previously completed his internship. Despite the challenges of securing a project title due to the company’s demanding schedule, his perseverance paid off when he was entrusted with a significant project under the guidance of Mr Tan Boon Khuan.

Lee’s project focused on investigating the root causes of yield loss in semiconductor manufacturing and developing engineering solutions to minimise such losses. His work involved addressing yield loss caused by Drain-to-Source current leakage (IDSS) and defect density, implementing analysis automation tools to streamline testing processes, and enhancing efficiency by reducing engineers’ data analysis time from three to four hours to just 30 minutes.

The outcomes of his project were impactful. Over its duration, Lee contributed to a 0.67% reduction in yield loss between 2024 and 2025—a significant achievement in high-volume semiconductor production, where even fractional improvements translate into substantial gains.

Reflecting on his experience, Lee said that working with Infineon was invaluable in strengthening his professionalism, industrial knowledge, and time management skills. He also noted that the industrial-based FYP offered unique benefits and challenges, requiring a balance between company responsibilities and academic commitments.
