Exploring Fulbright: Opportunities for Malaysians to study and research in the U.S.

The Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE) conducted a sharing session on the Fulbright Programme at UTAR Sungai Long Campus on 30 July 2024. Hosted by the Institute of Management and Leadership Development (IMLD) and welcomed by Prof Dr Cheng Ming Yu, Fulbright Malaysia Ambassador at UTAR, the session aimed to introduce students, academics, and professionals to the prestigious Fulbright opportunities available for Malaysians in the United States.

The session was delivered by Fulbright Senior Programme Manager Mr Teoh Tze Imm and Fulbright Programme Coordinator Ms Leena Rajagopal, who provided detailed insights into the available programmes. It was divided into two parts, namely the Global Undergraduate Exchange programme (Global UGRAD) and the Visiting Scholar and U.S. programme. The speakers shared comprehensive information on eligibility, application procedures, and the benefits of participating in the Fulbright Programme, which is globally recognised for fostering academic excellence, cultural exchange, and mutual understanding.

Adding to the session, Fulbright alumnus Assoc Prof Ir Dr Lim Boon Han, Fulbright Malaysian Scholar 2024/2025, shared his personal experiences of living, researching, and collaborating in the U.S., offering valuable inspiration to the UTAR community. The visit also explored opportunities for UTAR to host Fulbright U.S. scholars and student researchers, creating avenues for collaborative research, cross-cultural engagement, and strengthened international partnerships.

About Fulbright and MACEE

The Fulbright Programme is the flagship international academic exchange initiative sponsored by the United States government. Established in 1946, it aims to promote mutual understanding and build lasting connections between the people of the U.S. and its global partners. In Malaysia, the programme is administered by the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE), a binational organisation founded in 1963 to foster educational and cultural exchange between Malaysia and the U.S. MACEE provides opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals to study, research, and teach in both countries, thereby strengthening academic collaboration and cultural diplomacy.
