The Global Economics Society (GES), together with the Department of Economics from the Faculty of Accountancy and Management (FAM), organised a visit to Great Eastern Life Assurance Malaysia Berhad on 27 August 2025. The visit was led by FAM academic and GES Advisor Mr Low Choon Wei and joined by 36 students.
The purpose of the visit was to expose students to the operations and career opportunities within the financial services industry, while bridging academic knowledge with practical industry experience.
Students were warmly welcomed by Head of Agency Recruitment and Productivity Mr Scott Wong Charng Yeon, Product Pricing Assistant Vice President Mr Jay Poh Yang Jing, Group Manager Ms Chee Chyl Ann, Senior Training Advisor Mr James Tan Swee Kiat, Assistant Manager of Training Analytics and Project Ms Christine Chong Siew Ting, and Agency Recruitment Team Associate Ms Elaine Fernandis.
Throughout the session, students were introduced to a wide range of topics related to financial services. Mr Jay Poh shared insights into the organisation’s career pathways, highlighting the skills and qualities needed to thrive in the insurance and financial planning industry. Students also learned about the Financial Planning Triangle, a model that emphasises the importance of structured financial management, as well as the fundamentals of risk management and the growing importance of medical insurance today.
Another key highlight of the session was the introduction to the Great A.C.E Apprentice Programme by Mr Scott Wong, which provides fresh graduates with valuable opportunities to embark on structured career development within Great Eastern. The programme is designed to cultivate young talents into future leaders of the financial industry by equipping them with the right training and mentorship support.
To further reinforce the learning experience, students participated in the Cash Flow Game, an interactive activity that simulates real-world financial decision-making. Through this engaging exercise, students applied financial planning concepts in a practical context, gaining hands-on understanding of budgeting, investment, and long-term financial management.
Reflecting on the visit, Mr Low shared, “The initiative aimed to broaden students’ perspectives beyond classroom learning and prepare them for future careers by exposing them to real industry practices and challenges.” Students also expressed that the session was insightful and inspiring, particularly in understanding how financial knowledge can be applied in both professional and personal contexts.
