Bringing the festive spirit of Merdeka to SMJK Perempuan Perak, the Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of UTAR Kampar Campus organised the Merdeka 2025 Kuih-making Workshop on 26 August 2025. The event was led by CFS Kampar Campus academic Mr Ho Wai Yew, supported by Ms Ooi Siew Fong and Pn Azmirawahida binti Zainuddin, and joined by the ERT Club students with great enthusiasm.
Held in conjunction with the Merdeka Day celebrations, the workshop aimed to honour Malaysia’s cultural heritage by preserving the tradition of kuih-making. Students were introduced to the history of traditional kuih, explored the process and science of preparing ingredients, and gained hands-on experience in crafting kuih. At the end of the session, participants proudly brought home the kuih they had made themselves.
Sharing her experience, Yap Ying En from Form 4S2 expressed, “I felt very happy and learned a lot of new things. I learned how to knead dough and complete the making of onde-onde.” Meanwhile, Resheela a/p Suresh Kumar from Form 3S reflected, “The activity was interesting and fun. It was my first time making kuih. In the future, I would like to join more hands-on activities similar to this one.”
