UTAR launches TAIGU e-Bike Sharing System
to advance sustainable campus mobility

The ceremony was officiated by UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat, who delivered the welcome address and officially launched the e-Bike sharing system. In his speech, Prof Dato’ Ewe described the initiative as more than a transportation service; it is a meaningful step towards building a smarter and greener campus environment.

He said, “This initiative reflects UTAR’s continuous commitment to sustainability and our aspiration to build a campus that embraces smart mobility solutions. It is a meaningful step towards reducing carbon emissions while promoting convenience and healthier lifestyle choices among our students and staff.”

Also present were United TAIGU Technology Sdn Bhd Chairman Mr Gao En Hai, TAIGU Managing Director Dato’ Ng Tong Hai, university staff members, students and invited guests.

In his speech, Mr Gao expressed his appreciation to UTAR for its trust and strong support in bringing the initiative to life. He noted that the shared e-Bike service was introduced with the aim of making commuting within the large and vibrant Kampar Campus easier, faster and more convenient for students and staff.

“Our goal is simple: to make getting around campus easier, faster and more convenient for everyone. Whether you are heading to class, the library or the cafeteria, these e-Bikes offer a practical solution for daily travel,” he said.

Highlighting the broader significance of the initiative, Mr Gao added that the e-Bike system also supports the shared vision of promoting green and low-carbon transportation. “By choosing e-Bikes, we are also taking a step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly campus,” he said, while emphasising the importance of safety, responsible riding and proper parking practices.

Developed with sustainability and user convenience in mind, the TAIGU e-Bike sharing system offers a practical transportation option for short-distance travel around campus. The system integrates smart mobility features such as mobile app access, real-time tracking, GPS and RFID parking systems, battery swap support and solar-equipped charging stations, providing users with a seamless riding experience.

Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) student Lee Fung Qi welcomed the initiative, describing it as a practical and forward-looking addition to campus life.

“With the size of the Kampar Campus, having an e-Bike sharing system will definitely make it easier for students to move from one place to another, especially during busy class schedules. At the same time, it promotes sustainable transportation and encourages us to be more environmentally conscious in our daily routines,” he said.

His sentiments were echoed by fellow students Chew Qi Hang and Yan Yun Shan, who shared that the initiative would improve commuting convenience while supporting UTAR’s green campus aspirations.

The initiative is aligned with UTAR’s broader Green Campus aspirations and complements the University’s ongoing efforts to reduce carbon footprint and encourage environmentally responsible practices among its community.

The launch ceremony concluded with an e-Bike demonstration session conducted by the TAIGU operations team, followed by a networking session.
