UTAR inspires students with engineering competition and workshop

UTAR continued its commitment to community outreach and STEM education with the successful organisation of the Bridge Building Competition and Concrete Slump Test Workshop (Secondary School). The programme was spearheaded by the UTAR Engineering Society, IEM Student Section, in collaboration with the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES), and held in conjunction with VEST 2026: Voyage of Engineering Science and Technology.

The event, which took place at UTAR Sungai Long Campus, brought together nine teams from various secondary schools for a day of engaging and hands-on learning. The Bridge Building Competition served as the highlight of the programme, challenging students to apply their creativity, teamwork, and engineering knowledge in designing and constructing model bridges.

The competition was evaluated by LKC FES academic Dr Ong Chuan Fang, who commended the participants for their innovative designs and strong problem-solving skills. After a competitive round of assessments, SMK Taman Desaminium emerged as the champion, followed by SMK Dengkil as the first runner-up and SMK Puchong Perdana as the second runner-up. Other participating schools included SMK Seri Indah, SMK Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, SMK Banting, SMK Seri Kembangan, SMJK Kwang Hua, and SMK Dato’ Mustaffa.

Following the competition, participants took part in a Concrete Slump Test Workshop conducted by the organising committee. The session began with a comprehensive briefing, followed by a live demonstration of the concrete slump test, a fundamental procedure in civil engineering used to assess the consistency and workability of fresh concrete. Students were then given the opportunity to perform the test themselves, gaining valuable hands-on experience and practical insight into real-world engineering practices.

The programme received highly positive feedback from participating teachers, who expressed strong support for similar initiatives in the future. Their encouragement reflects the success of the event in fostering interest and enthusiasm for STEM-related fields among secondary school students.

Overall, the programme achieved its objective of promoting engineering knowledge and skills while inspiring the next generation of engineers through meaningful engagement and experiential learning.
