Academics from UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) conducted a STEM outreach programme titled Electrical Principles for 106 students at Kuen Cheng High School on 11 July 2026. Sponsored by the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Malaysia Chapter, the programme aimed to introduce students to fundamental electrical engineering concepts through engaging presentations and hands-on activities.

The programme began with an introduction to the fundamental principles of electricity and magnetism. Through engaging explanations and live demonstrations, the facilitators introduced students to concepts including electric current, magnetic fields, electromagnetism and electromagnetic force. They also explained how these principles are applied in the operation of electric motors, which are widely used in everyday applications, such as household appliances, electric vehicles and industrial machinery.

To reinforce their understanding, the students took part in a hands-on activity to assemble a simple direct current (DC) motor using a battery, copper wire, magnets and other basic materials. As the motors began to spin, the students were able to observe first-hand how electrical energy could be converted into mechanical motion. The activity provided them with an opportunity to apply the principles introduced during the presentation in a practical and engaging setting.

Throughout the programme, the students participated actively in the discussions and hands-on activity. They asked questions, exchanged ideas and worked together with their peers to complete the motor assembly. The interactive approach encouraged students to explore and experiment while developing their critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork skills. It also helped them gain a better appreciation of how fundamental electrical engineering principles are applied in real-world technologies.

By bringing electrical engineering concepts beyond the classroom, the programme provided the students with an engaging learning experience while broadening their awareness of the possibilities within science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The initiative also highlighted the importance of introducing young learners to engineering concepts through practical experiences that can spark curiosity and encourage them to explore future study and career opportunities in the field.

Through initiatives such as this, UTAR continues to engage with schools and inspire the next generation of engineers, equipping young learners with the knowledge, curiosity and confidence to explore the world of engineering and technology.
