Philanthropic support expands educational opportunities for Orang Asli students at UTAR

A generous donation of RM1million by Mr Yu Kok Ann, founder of Golden Donuts Sdn Bhd, has opened new opportunities for students from Orang Asli backgrounds to pursue higher education at UTAR. The contribution reflects a strong commitment to social mobility, talent development, and inclusive education through the establishment of the Dunkin-UTAR Unity Scholarship.

The Dunkin-UTAR Unity Scholarship was established to support deserving Orang Asli students in pursuing tertiary education. Through this scholarship, financially disadvantaged yet high-potential students will be given the opportunity to develop their talents, realise their academic aspirations, and build a better future through education.   Through this scholarship, financially disadvantaged yet high-potential students will be given the opportunity to develop their talents, realise their academic aspirations, and build a better future through education.

On 20 January 2025, Mr Yu visited UTAR Kampar Campus and UTAR Hospital to gain first-hand insight into the University’s academic environment and facilities. During the visit, he expressed admiration for the vibrant campus life, the distinctive architectural design of Dewan Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, and the serene lake views that contribute to UTAR’s holistic learning environment. The visit also included a tour of UTAR Hospital, where Mr Yu learned about the range of medical services provided and the University’s role in supporting community healthcare.

The visit was hosted by UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat and UTAR Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong. This was followed by a luncheon hosted by UTAR Council Member Mr Hew Fen Yee at the Grand Kampar Hotel. Over lunch, Mr Yu enjoyed local specialities, including the well-known curry bun, while engaging in meaningful discussions that fostered mutual understanding and strengthened connections. Mr Yu described the visit as both enriching and enjoyable, providing valuable insights into UTAR’s vision, development, and societal impact.
