Over 40 international students from the UTAR Sungai Long Campus embarked on an immersive One-Day Cultural Journey through Kuala Lumpur on 6 December 2025, gaining first-hand experience of Malaysia’s rich heritage and modern vibrancy.
The journey began in the morning in Kampung Baru, a historic Malay enclave nestled amidst the towering skyscrapers of Kuala Lumpur. Students explored the rustic charm of the century-old village, marvelling at the traditional wooden architecture of Rumah Limas houses and the vibrant street life that has remained remarkably preserved since 1899.
The morning walk concluded with a feast of local Malay cuisine. Students enjoyed authentic dishes such as nasi lemak and ayam goreng berempah, providing a delicious introduction to the food paradise of Malaysia.
At noon, the group transitioned from the living history of the village to the structured narratives of the National Museum (Muzium Negara). The tour through the museum’s four main galleries—Early History, Malay Kingdoms, Colonial Era, and Malaysia Today—offered a comprehensive timeline of the nation’s evolution. Highlights included the replica of the Perak Man and the intricate regalia of the Malay Sultanates.
The cultural immersion continued at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM). Students were captivated by the world-class collection of Islamic textiles, ceramics, and woodwork. The museum’s stunning turquoise domes and the Malay World Gallery particularly resonated with the participants, showcasing the artistic synergy between Islamic tradition and Southeast Asian craftsmanship.
To conclude the day, the students visited the Perdana Botanical Garden. Under the shade of tropical trees, the group enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the Sunken Garden and the Hibiscus Park. The session served as a perfect backdrop for group photos and reflections on the day’s discoveries before the group departed for the Sungai Long Campus.
The trip successfully provided international students with a deeper understanding of their host country, fostering cultural appreciation and building lasting friendships.
