UTAR formalised a strategic collaboration with Rafflesia Technology Sdn Bhd through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance research and development in railway systems, optimisation technologies, and future energy solutions on 22 January 2026 at Sungai Long Campus.
The MoU established a collaborative partnership in areas including railway traction simulation modelling, energy-efficient train control and optimisation algorithms, Dynamic Programming for eco-driving, Simulated Annealing for timetable optimisation, real-time traction simulation with signalling logic, and graphical user interface development for research purposes. The partnership also paved the way for potential future research in microgrid and energy management systems (EMS).
Under the agreement, both parties will engage in joint R&D, integrating advanced algorithms into practical simulation frameworks, and exploring novel methodologies arising from research. UTAR students will benefit from opportunities to undertake final year projects, master’s theses, and doctoral research based on these modules, with Rafflesia Technology Sdn Bhd providing industrial co-supervision and periodic project guidance.
Commenting on the collaboration, UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat said, “This partnership reflects UTAR’s commitment to bridging academic research with real-world industrial applications. Our students and researchers will gain invaluable hands-on experience, contributing directly to innovative solutions in railway and energy technologies.”
CEO of Rafflesia Technology Sdn Bhd Ir Ooi Ban Juan added, “We are excited to collaborate with UTAR in developing advanced simulation tools and optimisation algorithms. Together, we aim to push the boundaries of railway and energy system research, while nurturing the next generation of talent in this field.”
Also present at the signing ceremony were Rafflesia Technology Sdn Bhd Executive Director Mr Paismanathan Govindasamy, Power System Lead Ms Liong Yu Ling, LKC FES Deputy Dean for Student Development and Industrial Training Assoc Prof Ts Dr Lee Kim Yee, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Head Assoc Prof Ir Ts Dr Lee Ying Loong, Department of Computing Head Ts Dr Hoo Meei Hao, and Centre for Railway Infrastructure and Engineering Chairperson Ir Prof Dr Chua Kein Huat.
