UTAR STEAM Outreach conducted a series of STEM programmes at three secondary schools in June 2026, engaging students through hands-on experiments and talks centred on science, technology and clean energy.
On 11 June 2026, UTAR conducted a STEM experiment demonstration at SMJK Nan Hwa in Sitiawan, Perak, from 8.00am to 12.30pm at the school laboratory. Students took part in a series of hands-on activities, including the Tower Challenge, conducted by Ts Dr Tan Zi Yi from the Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology; the Mini Brick Construction Activity, conducted by Dr Chong Chee Siang; and the Tinkercad with Arduino session, conducted by Dr Soo Qi Ping. The activities encouraged participants to apply engineering and design thinking principles in a practical setting.

SMJK Nan Hwa students and academics with UTAR academics
On the same day, UTAR was invited by Pin Hwa High School Klang to conduct a series of engaging STEAM workshops for Junior Middle 3 students. The programme aimed to give students early exposure to various academic disciplines, helping them gain a better understanding before making future study decisions. It also offered valuable insights into university learning experiences, encouraging students to explore their interests and potential career pathways.
To support this initiative, UTAR academics and student representatives conducted a variety of interactive and hands-on workshops. These included the ECG & Cardiac Cycle and Advanced Minimally Invasive Technology in Medicine workshops by the UTAR Surgical Society; the Tuina Workshop by Mr Wang Chaozheng from the M. Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences; Programming Fundamentals Using Scratch: Maze Game Development by Dr Nawaf Hassan Mohammed Mohsen Shrifan from the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science; Money Smart Teen by Ms M. Logeswary from the Faculty of Accountancy and Management; and Spill the Kopi: The Art of Hype & Damage Control by Ms Khor Gee Khing and Ms Yong Xin Yi from the Faculty of Creative Industries.

On 24 June 2026, UTAR was invited to deliver a talk on Solar Energy for Form Four students of SMJK Chong Hwa, Kuala Lumpur. The talk was delivered by two of UTAR’s distinguished academics, Ir Prof Dr Chua Kein Huat and Ir Prof Dr Lim Boon Han from the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science, who shared their expertise and insights on renewable energy technologies and sustainable development. The session introduced students to the fundamental concepts of solar energy, its applications in modern society, and its growing importance in addressing global energy and environmental challenges, giving them a better understanding of how solar power systems work and the role of renewable energy in reducing carbon emissions.
During the interactive session, students were exposed to real-world examples of solar energy implementation, including live demonstrations of solar-powered devices, and learned how innovation and engineering contribute to building a greener and more sustainable future. The talk sparked active engagement among the students, who raised questions about the practicality and future potential of solar technology in Malaysia.
