UTAR and Guangzhou University establish joint laboratory to advance China-Malaysia space information research collaboration

UTAR and Guangzhou University strengthened their academic and research partnership through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU), a student exchange agreement (SEA), and a framework agreement on the establishment of the China-Malaysia Belt and Road Joint Laboratory for Space Information Corridor on 22 June 2026 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus.

The agreements mark a significant step forward in advancing collaboration between the two universities in aerospace information, intelligent remote sensing, Earth observation, space information services, sustainable development applications, student mobility, and talent development.

The signing ceremony was led by UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat and Guangzhou University Vice President Prof Dr Zhang Qixue. Also present were Guangzhou University Institute of Aerospace Remote Sensing Innovation Dean and International Eurasian Academy of Sciences Academician Prof Dr Gu Xingfa, Institute of Aerospace Remote Sensing Innovation Executive Dean and International Academy of Astronautics Academician Prof Dr Wang Jinnian, as well as representatives from both institutions.

In his welcome address, Prof Dato’ Ewe said the collaboration reflected the shared commitment of both universities in advancing scientific innovation and strengthening Malaysia-China academic ties. He noted that the joint laboratory would provide a platform for researchers to collaborate in space information technologies, remote sensing and sustainable development applications, while creating meaningful opportunities for students and young researchers through talent development and academic exchange.

The China-Malaysia Belt and Road Joint Laboratory for Space Information Corridor will focus on scientific and technological cooperation in areas such as advanced remote sensing satellite systems, Earth observation, intelligent processing of remote sensing data, remote sensing big data analytics, satellite data sharing services, and sustainable development monitoring.

Among the key areas of collaboration are research on low-latitude satellite constellation networking technologies, intelligent remote sensing applications, calibration and validation technologies, and satellite applications for disaster management, precision agriculture, marine resource monitoring and environmental sustainability. The partnership will also explore opportunities to establish satellite ground receiving stations, develop space information data processing platforms and promote intelligent satellite service systems for Southeast Asia.

Speaking on behalf of Guangzhou University, Prof Zhang expressed appreciation for UTAR’s warm hospitality and described the collaboration as an important beginning for both universities. He said the joint laboratory, together with future cooperation in research, student exchange and talent development, would create valuable opportunities for academics and students from Malaysia and China, adding that Guangzhou University looked forward to expanding the partnership into more areas.

Beyond research collaboration, the student exchange agreement will facilitate reciprocal mobility opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The programme will begin with the exchange of three students annually for one semester, providing participants with valuable international learning experiences while strengthening academic and cultural understanding between the two economies.

The MoU further provides a framework for broader cooperation in joint research projects, postgraduate education, academic exchanges, internships, joint supervision, and faculty mobility.

Representing UTAR were Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science Dean Ir Prof Dr Chang Yoong Choon, Deputy Dean for Student Development and Industrial Training Assoc Prof Ts Dr Lee Kim Yee, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Assoc Prof Ir Ts Dr Lee Ying Loong, LKC FES academic Dr Toh Chia Ming, Office of International Affairs Deputy Director Dr Teh Lai Kuan, and Senior Assistant Manager ChM Dr Julia Tan Meihua.

The ceremony concluded with the exchange of commemorative gifts and discussions on future collaboration opportunities, reaffirming both universities’ commitment to developing a long-term partnership that advances scientific research, talent development and innovation for the benefit of the region.
