It was another proud moment for a group of students from the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FICT) when their names were announced as the second prize winner at the Huawei Malaysia National ICT Competition 2023-2024 APAC, one of the prestigious competitions organised by Huawei Malaysia.

Held virtually on 30 November 2023, the completion was concluded with an award-giving ceremony on 18 December 2023 at DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur.

Themed ‘Connection, Glory and Future’, the competition aimed at promoting the healthy development of the ICT talent ecosystem and supporting the integration of industry and education.

Coached by FICT’s Department of Computer and Communication Technology lecturer Dr Aun Yichiet, the team consists of Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) students, namely Ng Shi Qi, Teo Teck Wan and Lim Xuan. They won the National Second Prize under the category of Cloud Track and walked away with four Huawei Nova Mobile Phones along with four certificates of achievement.

Reflecting on their success, the team said, “We joined the Huawei APAC ICT Competition to challenge ourselves against the best minds in the region. What made us stand out was a relentless pursuit of excellence and a deep passion for technology. Winning is more than an honour; it is proof that our dedication and innovation truly set us apart.”

The team also dedicated the award to UTAR and emphasised, “Winning this award truly reflects the practical hands-on experience that UTAR has offered. It is not just the technical knowledge, but the way the University encouraged us to think creatively and work as a team; that really paved the way for this success.”

They concluded, “We were eager to represent our University at the Huawei Malaysia ICT Competition as it allowed us to challenge ourselves and learn new skills that are in demand. It also potentially opens doors for our future tech careers.”

Huawei ICT Competition is a competitive ICT talent exchange event developed by Huawei for global higher learning institution students. Huawei invited Huawei ICT Academy and universities with relevant majors to participate in the Huawei ICT Competition 2023-2024. The Cloud Track, which focused on IT technologies such as Cloud, Big Data, and AI, involved a theoretical examination covering these specified fields.
