As a continuation of the
first session, the
E-Commerce for Timber Industry webinar was held on 23 August 2021.
Organised by the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC),
the webinar aimed to provide insight to the members on ways they can
kick-start e-commerce businesses from their existing manufacturing business.
The webinar, which saw more than 160 attendees
from the timber-related industries, featured two presentations from two
distinguished panellists from UTAR, namely
Lee Kong Chian Faculty of
Engineering and Science (LKC FES) Head of Programme for Master of
Information Systems Dr Wong Whee Yen and Faculty of Accountancy and
Management Deputy Dean for R&D and Postgraduate Programmes Dr Pok Wei Fong.
“Currently, they are selling the products they
have manufactured through local and foreign wholesalers while producing OEM
and ODM products for well-known retailers such as IKEA. The profit margin
was low because they did not focus on branding before this,” said Dr Pok.
She added, “The MTC would like to encourage the
manufacturers to build their own brand and sell directly to their targeted
market using both B2B and B2C e-commerce strategies to increase the profit
margin and to add value to the GDP contributed by exports of timber
products.”
The one-and-a-half-hour session was moderated by
MTC Market Promotion Division Nornajjua Ariffah Mohd Nasir.
The Digital Marketing Entrepreneurship Programme
(DMEP) Learning Module English is a programme that is specially designed to
provide training to Malaysian timber companies that have the interest to
complement their current marketing activities on digital and e-commerce
platforms.
