The Kuala

returned this year in
conjunction with the 16th Malaysia Festival
of The Mind. The opening ceremony was held in a hybrid form
on 9 December 2022. It was live-streamed
from three different locations, namely UTAR,
Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) and
Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and
Technology (TAR UMT). It was broadcasted via Zoom and Facebook.
The science fair, which was filled
with STEM-inspired activities,
offered
more than 40 free webinars,
competitions and workshops as well as a virtual symposium
and hands-on activities for participants to
experience the fun and real-world applications of science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics (STEM). e-KLESF 2022 not only served as a
platform for students to showcase their talents and prepare for their career
pursuits but it also fuelled their curiosity through STEM projects and
activities.
e-KLESF 2022 was jointly organised by UTAR, ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology
(AAET), The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), the Malaysian
Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), the Malaysian
Invention and Design Society (MINDS) and Tunku Abdul Rahman University of
Management and Technology (TAR UMT). It was supported by The Associated
Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) and the
Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM). The collaborators of e-KLESF 2022 were
the Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement, Multimedia University and Tunghai
University.
Tun Ling welcoming
the participants
Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement
Chairman Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik said as he welcomed the participants, “There
are many interesting and challenging practical activities that promote the
use of science and maths, which are very educational. I hope you will use
this platform to explore, participate and expand your knowledge while
connecting online with other students with similar interests in STEM. I
applaud all the organisers and supporters for the continuous efforts in
promoting STEM education through the KLESF.”
Datuk Dr Mohd
Yusoff emphasising on the importance of STEM education
An appreciation note was also
given by the Co-Chairman of KLESF Steering Committee and Malaysian
Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), Datuk Dr Mohd Yusoff
Sulaiman, who said, “The strong theme of KLESF is partnership; the
partnership between co-organisers; the partnership with various ministries,
industries, schools and local authorities. This is the key that made this
event successful.”
He added, “I hope KLESF will be
bigger and better next year and attract more participation from schools and
supporters. Our main aim is to mainstream STEM in an exciting way for our
children to explore and love these subjects. Therefore, even if they do not
pursue a STEM career in the future, they will still be able to use them in
their lives in every way. So, I hope with this KLESF; we will increase the
love and interest for STEM in everybody’s mind and all the
rakyat of Malaysia.”
Prof Lee
addressing the importance of STEM
Co-Chairman of KLESF Steering
Committee and President of Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and
Technology (TAR UMT) Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei welcomed everyone and said, “Our
objective is to enhance the interest in STEM among the youngsters in
Malaysia. Over the years, we have managed to attract many participants and
we have also helped a lot of school children to spur their interest as well
as learning. STEM is very much a part of our lives today. It provides the
solution for us to solve many problems that we face in the world today.”
Prof
Dato’ Ewe hoping participants would enjoy and benefit from the variety of
activities in KLESF
In his speech,
UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat said,
“STEM is the solution to many of the world’s
current challenges and issues, including
pandemics, climate change, sustainable development, and renewable energy.
Thus, early STEM education is necessary to
ensure that the next generation understands
the value of these subjects. e-KLESF 2022 seeks to provide students, the
general public, parents, and participants worldwide with the
abilities of science and technology to address the
challenges around the world and to foster
interest and excitement in STEM among students.”
