SES Intra-University Competition 7.0

UTAR Structural Earthquake Stability Competition 7.0 (SES-VII) Intra-University Competition 2022 was held at Sungai Long Campus on 3 July 2022. It was jointly organised by The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Student Section, Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Student Chapter and the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science Department of Civil Engineering.

The competition was sponsored by NS BlueScope Lysaght Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Acre Works Sdn Bhd. It aimed to provide a platform for students to apply their knowledge and skills in earthquake engineering. The competition also aimed to provide an opportunity for students to apply their creative and innovative ideas to design engineering structures that resist simulated earthquakes.

Present at the opening ceremony were UTAR President Ir Prof Dr Ewe Hong Tat, Civil Engineering Department Head Ts Dr Yip Chun Chieh, Structural Earthquake Stability Competition 7.0 Advisor Ts Dr Lee Foo Wei, NS BlueScope Lysaght Malaysia Sdn Bhd Technical & Design Manager-cum-judge Ms Suraya Johari, representative from NS BlueScope Lysaght Malaysia Sdn Bhd Santa Goh, Organising Chairperson Lim Kai Jun, and SES Intra-University Competition 2022 judges Dr Lau See Hung, Dr Woon Kai Siong and Ir Ts Dr Kwong Kok Zee.

Prof Ewe delivering his speech

Prof Ewe thanked NS BlueScope Lysaght Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Acre Works Sdn Bhd for their trust and support in making the event a success. He said, “This competition does not only improve the students’ technical knowledge and managerial skills, but also enhances students’ creativity, and innovation in constructing a cost-effective structure that can withstand seismic loading. Apart from that, this competition promotes awareness among undergraduates about the relevance of seismic design, while improving their grasp of theories and ideas, their soft skills as well as their capability to propose a practical solution.”

Lim thanking the lecturers, sponsors, committee members and participants for the support

Lim thanked the lecturers, sponsors and participants for the full support, and said, “I would also like to thank UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science and Department of Civil Engineering for giving their full support to our event. To our sponsors, NS Bluescope Lysaght Sdn Bhd and Acre Works Sdn Bhd, thank you for your generous sponsorship. It is our honour to have you on board for our event. Also, to all the participants today, thank you for joining us and hope you enjoy the competition,” He emphasised, “I believe that this topic is very exciting and interesting as we will see different creative designs from our participants later.”

Participants constructing their respective models

In the competition, the participants were required to build their own model within a given timeframe by utilising the materials provided, in compliance with the assigned theme and feature. The constructed structures were then loaded and tested on an earthquake stimulation shaking table and evaluated by the judges based on their earthquake sustainability and material efficiency. There were seven levels altogether, and each level was will be tested for 45 seconds.

During the assessment

Dr Yip congratulating participants for their excellent work

Dr Yip congratulated the participants during the closing speech and said, “I would like to thank all the participants for your excellent work. Although it was a short three- and half-hour construction, I was able to see creative designs from each of you who strived under extreme pressure and time restriction.” He also thanked the organising committee for their efforts.

The winning teams in the competition

Congratulations to the champion and first runner-up. These two teams will represent UTAR during the SES Inter-University Competition 2022
