Antennas are energy transforming devices and are essential to make good use of radio waves. There are two kinds of antennas: transmitting (Tx) and receiving (Rx). Tx antennas are designed for radiating energy into the air. On the other hand, Rx antennas are to collect incident energy and to deliver it to a receiver. The advantage of wireless systems by antennas are their long-distance transmission and mobility. The radiation and reception behaviors of radio waves will be explained for basic antennas. Then the measurement of free-space antenna characteristics is explained. In recent years indoor test ranges have been developed to simulate a ree-space environment. The advantage of the indoor measurement will be discussed. The modern applications of radio waves are in the three areas (1) communication, (2) energy transmission and (3) detection. For (1) a new small communication antenna to bio-medical applications and for (2) energy transmission into a desired direction will be discussed.

This Webinar Series aims to serve as an academic platform for researchers/ experts to present their research activities / success in research attained in all aspects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics as a whole to encourage substantive knowledge transfer. Furthermore, it will help in initiating the potential collaborations with universities worldwide, government institutions and agencies, and industries to build research links.
Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) has enabled the study of genome, transcriptome and microbiome with decreasing cost but increasing accuracy and speed. This very technology of sequencing has revolutionised biological research. Many aspects of biological work previously considered as impossible task has now become routine with the availability of NGS. In Dr Chan's lab, he uses NGS to obtain complete genomes from microbes to human genomes from hours to few days. Using various NGS platforms, his lab has applied NGS to discover the genome features of hundreds of pathogenic and environmental bacteria by in silico genotyping, gene prediction and downstream gene cloning and characterisation. Dr Chan's lab has also solved the "unsequencable" human genome enabling identification of unique sequences associated to diseases. At the ecosystem genomics level, his lab has completed scores of microbiomes reporting the novel microbial assemblage from tropics seawaters, carnivorous pitcher plants microbiome to Antarctic soil. In this lecture, he will share his experience in applying NGS research on human microbiomes, multidrug resistant bacteria genomes, mitogenome and his latest work on bacterial methylome.

Is Zero Hunger an achievable global goal? The issue is not so much a paucity of effective technologies to produce enough food, but one of effective management of the food produced. The paper will attempt to show that various socio-political factors are at play in causing the uneven distribution of available food. Among these are poverty (unequal distribution of wealth), losses due to poor storage, transportation and handling of agricultural produce and food, as well as wasteful lifestyle (including overeating). Some suggestions are made on how to achieve more sustainable food production systems, such promoting vegetarianism or “flexitarianism”, urban farming (to reduce carbon footprint), and “clean meat” production.

With accelerated development of industrial activities, the CO2 generated by the combustion of hydrocarbon fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas far exceeds the previous level. It has become a serious global environmental problem. How to effectively control the CO2 amount in the atmosphere has attracted great interest in multidisciplinary researchers such as environment, materials, chemistry, and chemical engineering. One of the solutions is to convert CO2 effectively into useful chemicals. However, due to the CO2 is a stable molecule, CO2 conversion requires energy. Based on the construction of C-O and C-H bonds, this presentation focused on the key problem of how to realize the CO2 activation in the catalytic converting process by using the thermal catalysis and photocatalysis, and the weak interaction between the CO2 and the catalyst and the activation mechanism of the plasma were studied, and converting the CO2 into methanol, methane and dimethyl ether under mild conditions. The presentation includes the heterogeneous catalytic CO2 conversion, design of Y-contained and 2D catalysts for photocatalytic CO2 reduction, and activation of CO2 for catalytic conversion by plasma.
Speaker:
Dr. Qin Zuzeng is a full professor in GXU. Currently, he is a Vice Dean in School of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, GXU; Editorial board member of Advanced Composites and Hybrid Materials; Secretary-General of the Guidance Committee on the Teaching of Chemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical in the University of Guangxi province; and a council member of Guangxi Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Association. Prof. Dr. Qin focuses on the environmental-friendly catalytic processes and synthesis/separation of fine chemicals: (1) catalytic conversion of CO2 strengthened by the plasma; (2) heterogeneous catalytic ozonation and catalytic hydrogenation of cinnamon oil. His projects are supported by the National Science Foundation of China (4 active awards), the National Science Foundation of Guangxi Province in China (3 active awards), and several industries projects. As a pioneering team in the field, his group published about 70 peer-reviewed journal papers, 1 of them are the ESI hot paper and 4 are the high cited paper. He has 20 authorized patents from his innovative research works, and 1 patent had been transferred for industrial applications.
