Synopsis:
The banana fruit is well-loved by many around the world because of its taste and nutrition. Bananas can be a staple in the kitchen and a quick snack to provide us an extra boost of energy when we are on the go. However, like many other crops, bananas are not free from disease infections. Most global production of banana, including Malaysia, are severely hampered by fungal and bacterial diseases, which could possibly wipe out the entire industry without proper disease management strategies. The Panama disease is an iconic example that has run rampant in the Latin America in the mid-20th century, crippling the banana industry. Hence, current available strategies in suppressing banana diseases and their potential challenges will be highlighted in this sharing session. It is hoped that this session will bring inspirations to more researchers, especially the young ones, to engage in the daunting quest of saving bananas from being wiped out!

Have you been ever hear joint pain resulted by mosquito bite? Yes, this is Chikungunya infection. Chikungunya infection is endemic to Asia and Africa with human known to be the natural host. From Ministry of Health (MOH), the number of Chikungunya cases has increased steadily for the past 3 years from 2018 till 2020. The increasing threat and burden of chikungunya will continue to threaten mankind in the future with the absence of specific antiviral or vaccine to control or eliminate the infection. Of course, the control and treatment regime for chikungunya warrant a more concerted effort. In which, one of the potential ways is through traditional Chinese Medicine.

Synopsis:
Today, there is an increasing number of food and non-food products in the market that highlight bioactive peptides as the main or as one of the selling points. Depending on how they are produced, you can take bioactive peptides to be just fragments of proteins which show biological effects/functions. Between 1990-2000, there was ~ 6 papers/year on bioactive peptides, according to statistics on SCOPUS. By contrast, in 2020 alone, there was 339 publications, indicating strong, continuously growing scientific interest on the peptides. In this webinar, Dr Chai would like to share with you current progress and interesting findings on food-derived bioactive peptides. In particular, their health-promoting potential, tools for their discovery, as well as some previous works by his collaborators and himself will be covered.

Synopsis:
The global diversity of small mammals is incredible, encompassing over 6/10 of total mammal diversity known to humans. However, small mammals are less studied compared to larger mammals. Being one of the megadiverse countries in the world, Malaysia is no exception to this case. Not only high in diversity, Malaysia is also high in mammalian endemism, many of these endemics are small mammals. This opens up various research opportunities especially for cross disciplinary studies. I will revisit some of the recent findings and other works done by various groups of small mammal researchers in the country. I will also present some research gaps and opportunities for people who are interested to further their work in small mammals.

Synopsis:
The extensive usage of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in industrial and consumer products raises the risk of releasing their residues into the aquatic environment. The presence of ZnO NPs in the aquatic environment could potentially cause cytotoxic effects on the aquatic organisms, especially on microalgae as they form the base for food web of aquatic organisms. Our study reported considerable cellular accumulation and significant cytotoxic effects of ZnO NPs on the nutritional supplement microalga Spirulina platensis by decreasing cell density, biomass, and photosynthetic pigments. The study results indicate that cultivating S. platensis in the water contaminated with ZnO NPs may conceivably not suitable for human consumption and also for poultry and aquaculture use, as the S. platensis contaminated with NPs might not fulfill the expected nutritional needs and also the chronic consumption of NPs contaminated microalga could potentially result in adverse health effects among consumers. Hence, it is recommended to screen the contamination of NPs in algal biomass during the cultivation stage in the industry to produce and market the quality Spirulina supplements.

"Saving seahorses means saving our seas". Seahorses are ambassadors of the ecosystem they inhabit and stand as flagship species for many marine ocean conservation issues that not only affect them but all the other species that surround them. However, the data we are knowing about seahorses does not paint the most positive outlook for their future. The species of Seahorses have been threatened by overfishing, destruction of habitat, by-catch, and ocean plastic pollution.
Speaker's Profile:
Dr. Adam Lim Chee Ooi is the Project Leader and Chairperson of Save Our Seahorses (SOS) Malaysia.
He obtained a Bachelor of Science (Marine Biology) from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) and completed his Doctoral studies in University of Malaya (UM). He studies syngnathid fishes extensively in Malaysian waters, focusing on various aspects of their biology and ecology, which provides a basis for their conservation. He is currently a Regional Focal Point for Southeast Asia of the IUCN Seahorse, Pipefish & Seadragon Specialist Group (SPS SG) and the National Seahorse Expert - Malaysia for the iSeahorse Project.
