Blockchain is an emerging technology based on distributed computing system and cryptography. Bitcoin is one of the most well-known applications of blockchain technology which revolutionised the development of crypto-currency. Blockchain 2.0 has impacted various industries including finance (FinTech), manufacturing, insurance and renewable energy (SolarCoin).
Drawing from his vast experiences in R&D as reviewer for international journals, such as IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computing (2016 and 2017), IEEE Sensors, IEEE Internet of Things Journal (2018-2020) and IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics (2018-2020), Dr Ben Lee Wai-Kong will give an overview on the historical development of blockchain, its current advancement and future applications and potentials, particularly in the areas of cryptography, GPU computing, numerical algorithms, Internet of Things (IoT) and energy harvesting.

Our recent research focus is applying deep learning techniques to various applications of image processing. In the past a few years, we have been working on several topics. One of them is road scene semantics segmentation. To lower the system complexity while maintaining good performance, we investigate the advantages and disadvantages of several popular CNN architectures in terms of speed, storage and segmentation accuracy. Through detailed experiments, we pick up the favorable components from the existing architectures, and at the end, we construct a light-weight network architecture called EDANet, which employs an asymmetric convolution structure and incorporates the dilated convolution and the dense connectivity. We test our proposed network on several datasets including the challenging Cityscapes dataset (resolution of 1024 ×512) with an mIoU of about 67.3% and 108 FPS on a single GTX 1080Ti.
The second topic is deep learning-based edge detection. we propose a traditional method inspired framework to produce good edges with minimal complexity. We simplify the network architecture to include Feature Extractor, Enrichment, and Summarizer, which roughly correspond to gradient, low pass filter, and pixel connection in the traditional edge detection schemes. The proposed structure can effectively reduce the complexity and retain the edge prediction quality. Our TIN2 (Traditional Inspired Network) model has an accuracy higher than the recent BDCN2 (Bi-Directional Cascade Network) but with a much smaller model.
The third topic is deep image compression. We propose several lossy image compression systems using the deep-learning autoencoder structure to participate in the Challenge on Learned Image Compression (CLIC), CVPR 2018, 2019, and 2020, and JPEG AI Call-for-Evidence 2020. We will briefly review the basic structure of a learning-based image coding system. And then we describe a hybrid coding system that includes a H.266 base laser and a CNN enhancement layer.

Hydrogen is a potential energy carrier for the future which can be produced via steam reforming, electrolysis, solar thermochemical, photobiological, photocatalysis and other methods. The pioneering work by Fujishima and Honda in the early 1970s showed the possibility of producing H2 from water using sunlight. The research started by embarking on synthesizing Cu/TiO2 photocatalyst. The photocatalysts were synthesized based on Degussa P25 TiO2 at the initial stage but at later stage Sr2Ta2O7 was also investigated. In order to obtain deeper understanding on the morphological, optical and chemical properties of the photocatalysts, characterization was conducted using various techniques such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy (DR-UV-Vis) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The photocatalytic activity of supported metallic photocatalysts was assessed for hydrogen production from water under visible light illumination. Througho! ut the journey, the research parameters investigated include types of co-catalyst, total metal loading and the effect from the presence of non-metal. The impact of methanol, glycerol and KOH addition as hole-scavengers on the efficiency of solar hydrogen production from water was also investigated.

Dr Chong Fai Kait is an Associate Professor at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. She graduated with B.Sc. (Hons) in Industrial Chemistry from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 1993, specializing in synthesis, characterization and application of copper(II)-glycerol complex. In 1998, she received her PhD from University of Dundee, Scotland in the area of heterogeneous catalysis for naphtha reforming process employing Pt-Re/Al2O3 catalyst. She has more than 20 years of academic and research experience and her main research interests are in photocatalysis and its integration with ionic liquids or other techniques for sustainable environmental applications. She is currently working on deep eutectic ionic liquids employed as extractant and electrolyte where glycerol is one of the precursor for synthesis. Her work was mainly dedicated to wastewater treatment and air pollution control. She has filed a total of 9 patents in Malaysia related to photocatalysis, of which two were granted.

October is the Mental Health Awareness Month that serves as a signal for us to focus on the Mental Health Care. One of the concerns when it comes to mental health is depression. Depression is a common illness worldwide, characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities, loss of energy, and other symptoms that affect our health condition. With this purpose, the Counselling and Guidance Unit of Sungai Long Campus invites all of you to join a free talk in Mandarin by our registered and licensed counsellor, Mr Barry Tie.
